Using the PHOIBLE dataset, I compared the phonemes in 75 of the most commonly spoken languages to identify which ones would cause difficulty for foreign language learners. I assumed the common predictions of several models of speech learning (SLM, PAM, NLM) that the perceived similarity of phonemes causes the listener to confuse them. However, I replaced the notion of "perceived" similarity with a fuzzy Jaccard index. Coming soon
Backword is a reverse dictionary that allows users to look up words by their properties (syllables, character length, sound, meaning, etc). The goal of this project is to resolve the "tip-of-the-tongue" experience especially in those with learning disorders, although it could also be used as a more constructive lexical resource for language learning than the traditional dictionary.
